No one ever talks about how it feels

Why doesn't anybody talk about how it feels?

Finding a job isn’t easy and it’s a difficult market.
There are fewer jobs at your level and they’re often hidden.
The weeks roll into months and self-doubt kicks in.

So, let's be honest and talk openly here.

No one ever talks about how it feels

If you’ve ever been unhappy at work or struggled with a job search, perhaps you know how miserable, frustrating and lonely it can feel.
Friends and loved ones try to help but they don’t understand what you’re going through.

On a bad day, you worry that you might never find a job because [INSERT YOUR FEAR HERE].

The outsider

You feel like an outsider looking in. You miss the connection and being part of something.

Suggestions and support from friends and loved ones start to feel awkward and at times embarrassing.

Why is this so hard?

Some days you want to scream.

“YES, I'M STILL LOOKING!”

But you put on a brave face for the outside world and reassure them (or is it yourself?) that these things take time.

Self-doubt kicks in (and it’s a mean so and so), your confidence takes a beating, and then when one of your friends lands a juicy job – you take it personally.

What's wrong with me?

Pressure at home

Your partner, who is supportive, is feeling the pressure too. They’re worried about you and they don’t want you to be unhappy. They notice that you aren’t your normal self and try to encourage you but you're so stressed out and sensitive that every comment feels like criticism.

Isolation

What started out as an opportunity to find something new and exciting has turned into a miserable chore. You hate the damn search.

You withdraw and isolate yourself more.

Online job boards are easier – better than being blanked or ghosted by a real person!

No one ever talks about the feelings and emotions that are triggered during a job search.

This is how it feels

  • It’s frustrating when you apply for jobs but don’t hear back.

  • It’s upsetting when you feel overlooked or ignored.

  • It’s disappointing when you don’t get the offers you want.

  • It’s awkward having to admit to others that you’re still looking

  • It’s worrying when your job search is taking longer than you’d thought.

  • It’s stressful when it feels like time is against you.

How can you turn this around?

Self-coaching questions

  1. What’s your biggest challenge/problem at the moment?

“I stumbled across Tracy's service when I came across one of her 'forthright' LinkedIn posts. At the time, I was going through a major career 'funk', and the associated emotional rollercoaster that goes with it. Tracy's no-nonsense, straight-talking approach was just what was needed to help me re-assess my strategy and goals, whilst encouraging positive self-reflection on my achievements. The whole process put fuel back in the mental and emotional tank, and was the huge boost of positivity I really needed! Would recommend Tracy to anybody facing a career crossroads or in need of a job search reboot!”
