What happens in a CV review

What do you think happens in a CV review?

You’re very much mistaken if you think that a CV review with me means you’ll get a few generic suggestions on how to make your CV look pretty.

You can get that for free from a newly trained recruitment consultant.

Trouble is if you’re trying to make your CV ‘look’ good by using meaningless corporate jargon and what I call ‘waffle’ you risk getting overlooked.

A fancy logo might be eye-catching but I can tell you for nothing – my eye soon wanders when your CV reads like a badly written job description.

If I’m going to be brutally honest – I've seen words and terms used in personal profiles that make me cringe.

Put it this way, if you were to meet someone in person or introduce yourself on a phone call, would you say – “Hi, I’m Paul, I’m a passionate, highly experienced merchandise director” or “I’m a visionary, forward-thinking operations director”?

Don’t waste the space on your CV by writing things like ‘strong business acumen’ without backing it up with evidence of results. Avoid overusing responsible for, managed and supervised if you’re going for C suite level roles.

If you’re going for the lean, mean CV create a one-pager – something to whet the appetite and start a conversation.

This is important:

When a recruiter or a potential employer is looking at your CV they want to know what you’ve done, where you’ve done and for how long and most importantly – what can you do for me?

Now if your CV is vague, muddled, overcomplicated, or too generic chances are that’s how you come across in a meeting or interview.

So if you want to know how I can help you to improve your CV and by default, the way you market yourself and experience the process we follow is very easy.

This is how it works:

  1. You contact me

  2. I send you a list of questions such as - Why do you need it reviewed? What are you trying to achieve with your CV? What types of roles are you interested in?

  3. You send me your CV and the answers to your questions

  4. I review your CV with my first impressions, against your answers, and with 20 years recruitment experience

  5. I give you my feedback and recommendations over the phone or Skype
